COHENS AMUSEMENT COMPANY, 1946

Deep Roots

The Cohen Family is a Montgomery institution, with strong links to the past and reputation for innovation and service that has always ensured a bright future.

Founder and President Raymond Cohen graduated from Sidney Lanier High School and attended the University of Alabama. He inherited an appreciation of the music business from his father,  with whom he worked at Cohen’s Amusement Company. They sold early forms of “consumer electronics” such as phonographs and black and white televisions.

In 1957, Raymond started his own related business–The Record Shop–in Normandale Shopping Center.

The years passed (as did recording formats:  LP’s & 45’s; reel to reel; 8-track; cassettes… Cohens sold them all). Eventually, The Record Store added a selection of high quality components on which to play music. The people of Montgomery liked what they saw and heard at Cohens. Steady growth let to the opening of a bigger store, in 1977, at their present location on Eastern Boulevard. The extra display space allowed the addition of appliances to the mix.

The move from selling records to offering high performance consumer electronics and major name appliances was complete in 1988 when, appropriately, the name of the company was changed to Cohens Electronics and Appliances.

While much has changed over the last 50 years, some very valuable things (thankfully) have not. Among those is Cohens hometown regard for providing the very highest levels of customers service, before and after the sale. And while Cohens offers prices competitive with the national chains stores, they continue to deliver a level of simple value that is unmatched.
